HOW TO DEAL WITH END-OF-SEMESTER STRESS—One of the certainties in life is that we will experience stress at times. The late semester push of getting projects done and preparing for tests is an obvious example. Stress is inevitable, but how you handle it is a choice. Healthy, positive ways to deal with stress is the key, and that will be different for each individual.
What will work for everyone is to focus on what you can achieve rather than having a fear of blowing it. In other words, have a goal of success instead of avoiding failure.
Do you have a huge task or project? Chop it up into phases. Turn a big thing into a few smaller ones. Then get started on the first one even if you dread it. It’s amazing how just getting started on something can develop momentum. Finish the first phase, then the next and so on. At some point, reaching the end becomes an emotional reward for the effort you’ve put into the individual phases. Working on a big project with only the end in mind will tend to make you shortchange parts of it just to finish. Focusing on smaller phases one at a time is virtually certain to make each part better.
Eat the right stuff: chicken, fish, nuts, fruit, yogurt (see our last newsletter), with red meat in moderation. Eat fewer carbs. Avoid sugary foods and drinks and, of course, overindulgences of alcohol. All this is to help keep your mind alert and focused.
Don’t go it alone. Find others that have the same focus on success. You’ll get encouragement and problem solving ideas from them. Believe it or not, helping others instead of thinking only about yourself will improve your performance. This is true for all aspects of life.

The adopted nephew of Julius Caesar, Gaius Julius Caesar Octavius, held the title “Augustus” and named August after himself. The five most popular summer vacations in the US are: (1) Beach/ocean; (2) Famous city; (3) National parks; (4) A lake; (5) A resort.
